How To Be a Horse Breeder

If you are passionate about a specific horse breed, you may wish to start a breeding operation to share your love for the breed with others. This can be a rewarding endeavor, but it requires a lot of preparation before you can open a breeding operation. Use these three steps to prepare yourself for a successful horse-breeding business.

Find Insurance

The purebred horses you need for breeding stock are expensive, and you can’t risk losing the money you paid for them if they become sick or injured. Horse insurance can help offset the cost of medical expenses, but you also have to think about how you will protect yourself after selling your stock. If a person is not satu=isfied with the health of a horse he or she bought from you, you want to prove that the claims are false. It is a good idea to invest in horse insurance for sellers so that you are not held liable for any fees.

Invest in High-Quality Breeding Stock

The horses in your breeding program will have a direct impact on the success of your operation. Start by choosing a few well-bred mares with great bloodlines. You can then pay a stud fee to breed your mares with stallions. Once you produce a few foals and your operation starts to grow, you may want to think about purchasing a stallion to add to your herd. This is a significant expense, but it will pay off if you aren’t having to produce stud fees. You will also have all of the rights to the stallion, so you can choose whether you want to loan him out for breeding purposes or keep him for your operation.

Choose a Great Vet

The health of your horses should be your top priority. Find a vet that specializes in large-animal care and has a thorough knowledge of the horse breed you are working with. You also want to work with someone who is available 24/7 and can make a call at any time if your animals get sick or injured in the middle of the night. A good vet can also intervene if one of your mares is struggling to give birth.

Breeding horses requires a lot of hard work. If you take the time to use these three steps, you can increase the chances of your breeding operation succeeding and produce healthy foals with great bloodlines.
